[T3] hands of clocks

ok im losing it a bit here.
   i need to get the hands off my clock so i can paint it the same as the
other two instruments how?
   if i pull any harder with pliers im sure the hands are gonna break!
   is there some secret method to getting them of , or dont they come of
normaly?
