20 deg on the 8-cyl scale means 40 deg on our engines, so it 
sounds like you were doing the right thing.

I would just ignore the feeler gauge for now and move the points 
around as someone turns the engine over with the starter. Can you 
get the meter to display ~25 deg?

Has this meter seemed to work correctly in the recent past?
