I had this hapen on our Fasty, though in my case it wasn't the PO -- it was my own damn fault. Spent days trying to track down the awful squealing/scraping noise (tho the car continuted to run just fine) before finally reaching my frustration tolerance and taking it to a local VW shop. They cut me a bit of a deal on the labor after I gave them one of my extra T3 fans (they had none, I had four), but the total bill was still $340.
