This is the way I've done it too, and on 5 VW engines. Works perfectly! It is also the way it is described in "How to rebuild your VW engine". Not to mention it is the only way to install them on a wasserboxer, because of the "cooling tins" or rather water jackets that are permanently cast to the engine case.
