I've heard that exhaust systems that are better at scavenging hot gases from the heads can actually have a negative effect on the performace of roughly stock-sized VW engines. The hypothesis as I understand it is that the engine needs some back pressure to develop good torque at mid-to-low rpm. For this reason some of the the boys in my club turn up their noses at four-tips and the like, and only go for headers on larger engines. Torque issues matter in the mountains.I wonder what our astute engineers think of this idea.
