GeraldR=> I have leaky valve cover gaskets. Would this cause my => engine to smoke through the exhaust? In a word, no. It could cause smoke production as the oil runs down the heat exchangers to the exhaust, but of course that wouldn't come out the tailpipe. It could also lead to catastrophic engine failure, so it'd be good to get some new seals in there. A compression test will tell you will indicate that excess oil might be getting into a combustion chamber. You may even be able to read this from an oily plug. If it's only on one side or one cylinder, you can pull the head to determine whether it's a valve-guide problem. => I have visually inspected my exhaust system and everything seems to => be tight and in good order. Could it be the heat exchangers and an unvisible => problem causing this? It's possible, but pretty rare. The joint sealing the rear of the lower exchanger tin to the exhaust manifold pipe, combined with a leaking pipe-to-muffler connection, is nearly always the problem. The clamps can be tight and still leak. What's most important is the condition of the asbestos donuts in the muffler joints. These crack and bits can fall out. THis is a relatively easy and cheap fix, so it's a good idea to replace these if they're old anyway.
