Chris, I have had these problems before and so much more . I learned this system the hard way and found it very understandable once you go through it : If you wish we can try troubleshooting phase by phase as all the bad experiences I had has given me some insight and empathy. I too had problems for one year and so much more that everyone has never heard of. My car runs very smoothly, accelerates beatifully, great gas mileage, reaches top speed easily , 90 mph and can reach 100 + when fear is lacking. Check this first (non EFI causes) 1.compression . How much is it ? ( I had 60 lbs on three and zero in one when I first got the car, very bad. 2. If your advance is set correctly see if it actually advances, using a timing light, does it move several bumps , max advance is around 18 to 23 degees depending on the version of the distributor. (mine did not move at all, 0 degrees on all speeds ) if it does not move suck on the vacume hose attached to the vacune advance , does it move the cam under the rotor?, if not you must clean this by disasembly of the center shaft/ advance mechanism. if you cannot disasemble (requires much patience, dexterity and micro screw drivers, center shaft circlip), oil it with deep penetrating oil or leave it in solvent for a few hours, it depends how stuck it is. This problem agrivated all of my problems. 3. does the engine miss in idle as you work on it? When you rotate the butterfly at the manifold does it vibrate as speed changes or is this only under load ? check spark plug gap too big of gap can cuase miss at higher speeds. dist cap good and wires good. Check coil for strong spark , should be nice and strong no invisible weeaklings allowed ? 4. Have you checked the valve adjustment, too tight can have consequences during higher speeds. 5. Check if cooling ducts are attached to your heaters or openings are sealed, no air should escape the fan shroud, if it does then overheating can occur as well as bogging down. 6. check your air control valve , is it sucking lots of air when engine is cold (morning)? Is it sucking very little or no air when engine is at normal temps or hot. These would be normal indications , all other ones would not be correct. This causes many bogg downs and unbalanced running , too slow and too fast idle. This was a headache for me. I need to go home now but I will e-mail you from there about the fun EFI side of this and every single problem and correction I had. ANSWER EACH ONE OF THESE WHEN YOU CAN.
