The last year of production for the type 3 was 73, except for
Austrialia which made a few into 74. All type 3s are rear engined
air cooled. Is this what you have?

If your date was just a typo, then you should just remove the
passenger door handle and take it to a locksmith. They can make
a "code key" from the numbers stamped on the handle. Unless you
have a very early year, the ignition key is the same.

To remove a type 3 door handle, open the door, and find the large
Phillips head screw in the door jamb just behind the handle.
Remove that screw and washer. Push the door handle forward and
lift it out of the door.

If you have an earlier type 3 where the lock cylinder is NOT in the
handle, then the instructions are different.
