Re: [T3] Loud Clutch

I think when it comes to clutch problems, you need to throw out the scalpel
and get out the chain saw. You can spend a lot of agonizing time trying to
figure out the exact cause of this noise or that, but you really should pull
the beast apart and visually inspect the parts. Be prepared to replace
anything or everything that shows signs of wear.

On throwout bearings, I've had my share of noisy ones, but I have never had
a throwout bearing fail to the point of affecting the operation of the
clutch. To check it, when you have it out, hold it in your hand while you
push down and turn on the inner circle. If you feel it's lumpy, then it's
junk (which means normal to me), if it's smooth, consider yourself one of
the elite few. If you want to impress your friends and have a noiseless
clutch, then go ahead and replace it if it's lumpy. If you want to save a
few bucks then make sure it's really bad first. (insert standard disclaimer
here about free advice).

On throwout bearing release arms, you should check for cracks on where the
prongs meet the shaft. These can and do fail. Also, check for wear where the
bearing rides.

On pressure plates, there are a LOT of cheaply made ones on the market.
Stick with SACHS. For my money, they best ones I have ever bought were from
Berg. They claim to check their parts for proper tolerances and settings
(even adjustments on the arms, etc) before they ship them out, but even if
they don't (which I have no idea if they do or don't), I have never had a
bum one from them.

On discs, I always avoid the ones with spring centers. My theory is that if
all the parts are good quality and straight and flat, then you will have a
very smooth clutch. I've never seen a solid center disc break, but I have
seen the spring center ones fail. Again, go with SACHS, and if in doubt, get
onet{‹rg. I don't mean to sound like a Berg fanatic, but they really
do
engine parts right.
