You may be exactly right about these being over engineered as far as the compensating pins go, especially in the cars after mid 68 when the stub axles got 2mm larger in diameter, but I think the angled cutouts are important in keeping the pad wear parallel. Without this feature I think the pads will tend to wear wedge-shaped. I admit that I don't have a lot of experience with modern calipers, but I think the reasoning is sound and all the calipers I am familiar with do something along these lines. As for the impression from the driver's seat, I agree that all of these should feel just fine. My point is that there are differences that are not perceptable in operation, but which may still be important. To me, leaving some of these features off just smells of cost cutting at the expense of quality.
