BillN=> Is it possible for the adjustment to be so tight that I can't
=> get ANY gauge to fit? Or just the opposite, the gap has opened
=> so far that it seems to be 1/8" or more?
Yes, no-gap happens, and it's not good -- you wind up blowing your power
out the exhaust or, worse, back up the intake, burning valves along the
way. I've never seen an eighth-inch lash, and there's no position of an
unbroken cam that would create a condition like that, so it's not a
matter of you being unable to find TDC. Since the car was running fine,
you probably have a dropped valve seat or other foreign matter
preventing the valve from closing. If only one valve is doing this, and
the rocker arm adjuster looks good, it's probably time to pull the head
and take a look. This would probably be an exhaust valve, and you may
notice signs of combustion on the valve train. Driving it the way it is
could do more damage.
