I need to do a valve adjustment but I'm afraid. ;o) It just never seems to go like I expect. I've tried it a couple of times when I had a beetle but turned the procedure over to a mechanic when I got my notchback. I have Muir's book and I've followed the step by step but it never seems right. It's the only repair/adjustment that I shy away from. Here is the basic problem... I rotate the engine.... get things where I believe I'm supposed to have them for a particular cylinder.... throw the feeler gauge in there to see where it's sitting and inevitably it seems to be way off..... double check to be sure I've got the engine rotated to the right point.... it still doesn't seem right. Is it possible for the adjustment to be so tight that I can't get ANY gauge to fit? Or just the opposite, the gap has opened so far that it seems to be 1/8" or more? If it is possible for the adjustment to be this far out than maybe I've been fine all along. I guess I just expected to find things at least close to what they were last set at. Input?
