The hose is made in 3 layers.

The inside layer is a rubber whose job is to keep the fluid from
leaking out.

The middle layer is a layer of woven cord which takes the
stress/pressure from the fluid contained in the inner layer.

The outside layer is rubber to protect the cord from abrasion. In
most circumstances the outer layer is just cosmetic.

The damage to be concerned about comes from asking that middle layer
to flatten enough to seal without cracking.
