This doesn't mean it's a bad case, certainly.
"He said that the engine also had bug tin around the cylinders, and that
is why the head where cracked."
I agree with the previous posts that he's talking about the more
elaborate deflectors underneath the cylinders ("cool tin"), which VW
gave the late type IIIs (type IV engines got a better deflectors too,
though it's not called "cool" because there was no other option, I
guess). It's better than the little deflectors, but it's not like all
bug engines have cracked heads, hmm?
"I have spoken to all other shops and they won't touch me, because the
engine is apart sooo the only option I have is a turn key I guess, if
you guys have any, any insight at all please help, I live in Sterling,
Virginia, right outside of dc."
Whoa! Slow down and use some punctuation. : ) What's this about
other shops not wanting to touch the engine because it's in parts? When
you build an engine, you build it from, uh, parts. This should be
standard practice for them. Any VW shop should be very familiar with
getting engines in parts. And although it's nice to take an engine
apart oneself, because there are some clues about its past that you can
get that way, they shop still has to check all the wearing parts it
plans to re-use/rebuild, which in a type1-3 engine should be very few,
since replacements are relatively cheap and easy to come by.
BTW, what is this nameless shop of which you speak, hmm? You might save
somebody else a bad experience.
Did this guy promise you it'd be done by a certain date? Did you get it
in writing?
There was a N. Virginia guy named Wayne Dittman at the Bug-Out who
rebuilds longblocks. He apparently keeps some in stock, though maybe
not Type III. His prices looked good. Does anybody have any experience
with this guy? I could dig up the contact info for him if you need.
