I don't say VW dealership because most I've been to only have a few VWs in a corner of the lot, the rest of the lot is taken up with all the other makes they sell. The countermen have been whoever they can get at minimum wage to push the parts across the counter and take the money(McVW). >> Next question, what's the easiest way to check if the rear ( front?) >> main seal is leaking at the flywheel? The big outside seal will leak(hasn't happened to me yet), and the o-ring in the flywheel can get hard and leak. My practice is to replace both any time I've got the flywheel off, cheap insurance. I had one of the o-rings leak on a trip from CA to IA(the one time I didn't replace one), I got about 100 miles to the quart and a very slippy clutch. I still managed 26 mpg, go figure. It did OK on the flat, but hills were a lot of fun. You can also get a crack in the case at #3 where the oil gallery is, not much you can do about that, but you'll have to pull the flywheel to see it. As long as you're there, check your clutch plate, throwout bearing and clutch cover, also the rear seal on the tranny. It won't take long and may save another teardown if you find something. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
