I think it was nearly 20 years ago that a VW salesman, in a showroom
flooo{ Æ sation, actually said to me: "Well, VW stands for front
engine, front wheel drive, after all."

It it is actually actively leaking, it will not be gunky; it will be
washed clean by the flow of oil over that area.
