My first tranny was from Transform, when they were entering the VW market. It was a high-performance, custom-geared one that lasted me 10+ years. It would've lasted longer if all the oil didn't drain out, but that's another story (don't let it influence your buying decision, it was my fault). My current 5-speed is from Gene Berg and Harold Carter. Another fine tranny, though my only complaint is it was shipped in a cardboard box from Harold's shop. For $1500 of work you'd think they would UPS it in a sturdier container. Maybe they should have Jake make their shipping crates ;) So, with my experiences, I've been happy with my mail order trannies. I'd recommend you spend the extra $150 or so and get a rebuilt one. It'll last you longer and you'll recoup the money back, I'm sure. Only a month? Wow, custom trannies take muuuuch longer...
