I think Muir was basically correct, the advice you usually get is for
water-cooled vehicles, a different breed of cat.  If you think about
it, what you have is like an air-cooled aircraft engine.  You don't
run those up to full power until they're warmed up.  Everything has to
be expanded to the proper dimensions before all the clearances and
such are as designed.  With the smaller thermal mass of the VW as
opposed to the aircraft engine, it really doesn't take that long to
get up to running temp.

I'd heard about the timer for the gas heater on the T4s, but hadn't
heard about one for the ignition.  You'd have to have an interlock
with the tranny on a manual car, I could just see the thing firing up
at 6 am and putting itself through the wall because you'd left it in
gear the night before.
