Actually, I believe the core of the 914 transmission is shared with some of the 911's. I'ts the Porsche 901 model. Knowing this, you should be able to switch the ring gear to make it go backwards (forwards). However, you should get an early one, as the 73 and later have side mounted shifter mechanisms which will give you big trouble with conversion into your chassis. You really don't need to go with the Porsche setup, as the VW one can be easily strengthened; I believe you can now get a Quaiffe differential for these which is on my dream list. However, as you are doing the T4 transplant, why not get a bus tranny and use it instead?
