The most likely thing is that something was making poor, or no, electrical contact and the vibration of your punch shook it and made it conduct. The problem is probably either in the ignition switch (does wiggling the key help? or in the starter. Punching may seem like a solution, but only until you break something REALLY expensive. Fix the PROBLEM before you make all of us really sad.
