The marketing types were just trying to keep it simple most likely. Since all
USˆÒ9 ls were "deluxe", why call it anything other than Beetle, Squareback,
etc.
For whatever reason, the rear decklid continued to have an extra set of trim
holes below the VOLKSWAGEN script. For '66 and '67 there is a simple chrome strip
stuck in there. Later models had AUTOMATIC (though maybe in a different
location?).
In a manufacturing environment it would be a lot simpler to make all body and
chasis the same up to a certain process. Then, say after paint, you would
seperate into different models. This of course would leave two extra holes in the
rear decklid of US bound cars.
