Usually they are a bit more than just umbrellas; they are called valve stem seals. > if you decide to do this, > remember that they did not come stock with them Actually, all the VW air-cooled engines came with something that VW called a "Ring-Oil Deflection" 113 109 619. They are black rubber square cross-section rings that fit snugly on the valve stem between the valve guide and the valve spring retainer. They help keep oil from migrating up the valve stem. With time they get hard, crack, and fall off, ending up in the oil sump where people find them and don't know what they are. I thought they were used on all 8 valves, but my microfilm shows a quanity of "X", indicating optional, or as required. I have new ones and have always used them on all 8 valves.
