So, I looked at the 68 Squareback this weekend. Body is in amazing shape. Virtually no rust anywhere I could see. Fenders in great shape, no rust on floor pan. Not a hint of rust on rockers. Roof lining interior is ratted up. drive‰Ó+Æneeds new rails welded in. Present ones are basically off the floor. blaupunkt radio works; wipers ok; cable for trunk is on the left?! and not original and not easy to use. would have to be replaced Steering wheel in perfect shape. Seat covers perfect shape (red) Orig jack in pretty bad shape. Car is FI. Started right up. So quiet! It had a decent amount of time to warm up, but in the driving test when I gave it any more than the smallest amount of gas going uphill in 1st, it bucked. Lots of white coming out the exhaust at warm-up but it was a pretty cold day. Turning radius seems tighter than my 72. There's a bash right under the steering box like it was driven over a rock or something. But I didnt have any steering problems. No freeplay on FE when I shoved the front wheels vertical and lateral Film of oil under the engine. Couldnt exactly locate source of leak, but definitely oil at the bottoms of the valve covers. Maybe just needs new gaskets. Transmission ok although not nearly the same tactile grab mine has. Never slipped out of 1st or reverse. Brakes: had to mash these down nearly to the floor to get them to work. Once I got to the right place, though, they did work instantly. But definitely not right. Drivers side heater box shot. This is as far as I got before I me and the PO ran out of time. I told her I'd have to look some more but for the time being couldn't offer any more than $1200. Shes had higher offers but seemed to like that I cared so much about it and asked me if I'd be willing to do 1500. I said I'd have to do further tests next weekend. She's cool with that. Was going to check compression, timing etc. Cant check valves because she uses the car and I cant get there early enough in the am. So, these are the initial points. What do you people think? Is 1500 too much? More importantly, what else should I test next weekend? Owner has no idea what kind of mileage its getting. She's selling it because she cant deal with street-parking 2 cars. She says it does 65-70 on the freeway. WhichÞV½ûssible to test here unless we drive an hour out of the city.
