Do you mean the rear swing axle on your 67 beetle, or one of the 
front trailing arms on your type 3s?

This is body shop work. You need ot check to see if metal is torn 
underneath so that your engine is drawing in hot air to try to cool 
itself. The cooling air should all come through the louvers on the 
tops of the rear fenders.

The 4 louvers started in 71 and are part of the "flow through" 
venš‡i system. The fan also started in 71 and does not help with 
the heat but rather with the fresh air intake. Your other car is 
earlier. Check the VIN's 3rd digit; I think you'll find that it will 
be a zero indicating a 1970.

In most ways, these two years are still very similar.
