Don't feel bad, your experience is very typical. When faced with problems like you had EVERYONE jumps to the conclusion that the trouble MUST be with the part they understand the lease, but 19 times out of 20, it is something simple, like this. > now one question i have is this: why do my points come out of adjustment so > much? i swear everytime my car starts to run crappy its the points. and > today i noticed that the lobes on the distributor shaft and the nylon rider > on the points were brown and a little crispy, as if they were > burning/chaffing/something?? This is worth repeating. The rubbing block on the points MUST BE LUBRICATED! And the grease must be replaced with clean grease occasionally. Just apply a thin film. I stock a very nice Bosch grease for this purpose; a lifetime tube is $11 plus shipping. Lack of lubrication leads to rapid wear of the rubbing block and closing up of the points, Bosch or not. It is common for the dist cam to become worn too, and this rough surface makes for even more rapid wear of the rubbing block. When I rebuild a dist, I resurface the cam. This is one of the most important things that I do in that process. The points will never stay in adjustment with a bad cam. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
