Well, shot in the dark here, but I'm guessing carb jetting problems. CB Performance (http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog/232.htm) has a Dellorto tech book (Weber too!). I'd give it a good rating of 8 on a 1-10 scale. It can help you. The Man (oh yes, he is!) to contact would be my engine builder, Rick Taylor at (208)466-3913. He is the master of the 40mm Dellorto carb and a very experienced VW air-cooled engine builder. That's what is now on my engine and he has it tuned very well. Gather up *all* your info on your engine (what's the compression ratio?), particularly the cam stats and carb jettings, and tell him I sent you. Brian Fye recommended him to me and I'm just loving the work he did and the recommendations he made for my engine (chime in at any time, Bri :). Your engine builder should've informed you on setting the valves, though once the builder has set them they shouldn't need it, being hydraulic and such. The stock ignition system is fine. Personally, I would strongly recommend you go to electronic points (Compufire is quite good) and a stronger coil. Jacobs Electronics or Mallory are the tops but there are others out there that are good. I'm willing to be you're going to need an oil pre-cooler. Guess I'm gonna have to scan my install pictures. A Mesa 48-plate oil cooler will work, maybe one size smaller if you put the cooler directly in an air stream. Mine isn't in one so I have a thermostatically controlled fan, and it's only fed oil when the oil thermostat says so...(yeah, more things to ponder and money to spend, welcome to the Darkside...)
