Reminds me of the Polock method of verifying electrical integrity. No kidding--this guy was Polish & they called him The Polock. Go figure. Anyway, this is on-topic because it's about the electrical system on an aircooled vehicle. So I'm swapping vacuum pumps on a DC-3 (actually a C-47) to verify one is bad. All bolted up & it's time for a test run. We tug the 50+ year old beauty out of the hangar & the Polock starts through his pre-start checklist which basically ends with the battery master switch on and starter engage for 12 blades before fuel is introduced, at which point there are a couple coughs of blue/white oily smoke & 985 ci of d rumble to life. So the verification system I learned after the battery master switch was closed was sort of a surprised "no sparks, no smoke! OK, we go." Not exactly what you want to hear in the cockpit.
