Use a higher octane fuel, like 91 or 92. The lucky bastards in Texas can get 93 at some gas stations. Is the engine CLEAN? Years of dust and oil can collect on the cooling fins and around the oil cooler. This accumulation acts as an insulator, keeping heat in AND keeping air from freely flowing into the oil cooler. Is the cooling system fairly air tight? You will have small air leaks here and there, but any big holes can really cause a loss of cooling air pressure to the rest of the system. Are the hoses connected between the cooling fan shroud and the heat exchangers? Some uninformed volks will remove the hoses along with the heat exchangers without capping the outputs on the shroud, allowing gobs of precious cooling air to escape. Is your timing advance SYSTEM working correctly? That is, if it's vacuum advance is the hose not leaking? Are the connections tight? The diaphragm puncture-free? Are the spark plugs clean? Carbon deposits can get hot and cause premature ignition (pinking, pinging, tyre, tire :) CC replies to: None, as I get messages right away.
