Is there any problem running 40 > wt.? You don't say, but I suspect that your observations are at idle. In this case, this is pretty normal. There is no big advantage to running anything heavier than SAE 40 oil, but these days modern SAE 10W-40 is fine. You don't want to run anything less than SAE 30 or SAE 10W-30 in warm weather.
