You need to ask yourself whether it really is likely to be spark plugs or if that is the only thing that you think you might understand enough to do. It is a common mistake that all people make: If your only tool is a hammer, all your problems look like nails. > (1) How do you get to the spark plugs??? Pull off the spark plug wires and you can touch their outer ends. > (2) Is there a special spark plug wrench for Type III or VWs in general? You need a spark plug socket that has an insert that will HOLD the plug while you snake it in or out. VW provided a special tubular wrench that did the lug bolts on one end and the spark plugs on the other. Works quite well, but you can buy something to work with your 3/8" socket drive at any NAPA store. > (3) Could it be the timing? Of course, or dwell, valves, fuel pump, carbs, points, coil, condensor, .... You name it. First thing, try to determine whether it is a fuel or a spark problem. Are you getting gas out of the carbs?
