Your mechanic doesn't know type 3 VWs.

This is an important thing to ask and get right. The type 3 engines 
DO use these spacers, but only when you are assembling an 8mm to 8mm 
(-69) engine. All the other possibilities, including yours, do not 
use them. 

If you ever see one of the 8mm to 8mm seals, you will see how much 
thicker they are. The 10mm to 10mm and 8mm to 10mm seals are much 
thinner.
