[T3] bad news (sort of) Broke motor................ ( long )

Well,

spring has sprung here in Michigan and it's time to fire up the cars that
have been sitting in the garage. I went out this morning and decided that it
was time to drive the notch. I undid the coil wire and went about cranking
the motor - to build oil pressure ( the car has been sitting since November
). Odd, after cranking for quite some time the light still won't go out. So I
set about removing the spark plugs so the engine would spin faster and
hopefully prime the pump. No dice. I took off the "out" line that's running
to the remote oil filter and cranked -- no oil out of that. The decision was
made to remove the fan shroud and fan etc. and take off the oil pump cover
and see what was up. This is where it gets ugly -- I took off the oil pump
cover and found that a "sp»ú/Šd been ingested into the oil pump seizing
the gears and snapping the end off the gear that keys into the cam face. The
spring looks like one of those springs that goes into the end of a hex bar
linkage for dual carbs. It's just so odd because the car was running fine
when I put it away. Whatever dislodged this spring from where it was hiding
and inserted itself into my oil pump is a mystery to me. Anyhow, to make a
short story long.......This of course is going to necessitate an engine
dissassembly because when I drained the oil I found a chunk of the oil pump
in the bottom of the oil drain pan.
When I frst built this motor 3 years ago ( I didn't actually get to run until
last year -- don't ask ) I had posted to the aircooled list about motor sizes
for a Type 3 and everyone said "oh no !!!! you can't go any bigger than 1776
with a type3 -- they don't cool as well as a type 1 -- that fan will never
cool down anything bigger" well, I'ma gonna throw caution to the wind here
and build a 74 x 90.5, that way I can use my P's & C's and just get the case
clearanced for the longer stroke.
I just needed to rant and tell my tale of woe.
It's gettin' darker out.......
Thanks, Dan
