RE: Trade Notch for Crewcab.

Hey, That's me!

I purchased a 1963 Crew Cab two weeks ago and drove it from Sacramento to
Seattle. I have some photos up: http://www.i405.com/vw/63Crew/ .. I spent 3
months looking every evening and weekend. I decided that a concentrated
serious search was better for me than a wait around until it finds me (the 3
year search <grin>).

I agree entirely with Matt -- Crew Cab (Double Cab) trucks are pretty rare
and extremely popular. Low supply + High demand. Despite all the stories
of $2000 super finds, all I could come up with was $5000 trucks that needed
2 or 3 major body repairs (take pick: rocker left or right , bed, gates,
nose, cab floors, battery tray, etc.).

Matt is right on to suggest that a trade would make a good deal even harder,
so you might be best to a) make sure you really know how much the Crew Cabs
are going for and how long they take to find. b) Sell your Notch for best
$, c) purchase Crew outright.

Using your friends and resources on the NET is a great advantage. I don't
know how else I could have done a long-distance purchase for the type of $
we are talking ($3500 + airfare and driving return). And this is for a
truck that needs new paint, transmission replaced (4th gear gone) and all
new inside panels and window seals (lots of labor). But those are the
projects that fit my skills, not major body (rust) repair...

I did everything I could to pre-screen the trucks I was interested in then
had a few members of the list check out local busses and give full body
reports. The best prices came up in Sacramento, San Jose and Arizona. When
I finally found one, I few down to drive it home. It is most likely cheaper
to have one trucked, but several people offered assistance. (Great Volks on
these mailing lists.) One of the type2 listees spent a whole day helping me
change gear oil, fix binding front brakes and track down parts to do simple
fixes like change the oil pressure sender (which wasn't working). All this
help just because he was a nice guy!

I don't know much about Type3's, I mostly on this list to keep up on local
events and so forth, but a type2 can't have a body-off restore like a type1.
All those huge sheet panels are welded -- so rust repair means you need to
be experienced with the welder. I presume Type3'ers suffer from similar
problems given that even bolt on body parts are unique from the Type1's.

If you are serious, start out by thinking through your budget and how long
you are willing to search. Also think about what skills you have to work
(body repair, engine/tranny, etc.)

One more tip: 1958 - 1963 / vs 1964 - 1967 is a pretty big design change in
the brakes and transaxle. In any event, a type2 of 1967 or earlier -- if
stock -- has a top speed of about 55MPH. As my transaxle needs repalced
anyway, I'm getting it upgraded to better R&P to do 65MPH in 4th. Do
consider this if you are looking for daily driver (like I).

not to cause problems here, but I've noticed a few things about Bus (crew
cab)
owners and T3 owners. Most of the time they dont stray outside their
"religion" if you know what I mean. I've seen on the Bus list that they
dont
give much thought towards anything but buses. For the most part the same
thing goes for T3 owners (they care about T3's mostly though).

There are a few people who happen to be fond of both. Me, everett, Charlie
Ford and Jeff Carver to name a few. Maybe this comes from an overall love
for
VW's in general, but as I'm sure some of the other milti-list subscribers
can
confirm, a nice crewcab is hard, very hard to come by. There was recently a
lenghty thread on the T2 list about a guy desparately looking for a crew
cab.
His search took him months if I remember correctly and he ended up traveling
to Sacramento from Seattle to finally buy his crew of choice.

What I'm really trying to say is that I dont think you're ever going to find
a
fair straight across the board trade for your Notch. I'm not saying that
youe
Notch isnt worth it (It actually looks like it is), but I think you'd have
better luck offering cash for the crew cab than a Notchback. If you're dead
set on only trading, I'd suggest subscribing to the Vintage bus mailing list
<www.type2.com> and maybe keeping an eye out there for a crew for sale.
They
do come up occasionally. You might also mention your desire for a trade to
the list and see what happens.

It does seem that you've had considerable interest in your Notch from the T3
list and it might be best to make sure it goes to a good home and then just
buying the crew of your choice.

Just a thought
