It's a reasonable approach, but not without a timing light. In your 
place I would assume (in the absence of compelling reason to think 
otherwise) I have a stock distributor and go with the manuals. They 
agree on static timing at TDC with the vacuum hoses off. Then I'd borrow 
a timing light and see what sort of advance I get.

This should be extending rearward from the left side of the distributor 
base; not a nut, but a bolt with a very long head, hidden by the fan 
shroud.
