I thought the type three IRS parts were EXACTLY the same as the Beetles??? Still, I agree that it is such a nasty job that the relube interval can be VERY long. I believe VW originally recommended that the CVs and bearings be done every 30K miles. I have never had a CV joint or rear axle bearing fail. I now only regrease CV joints when the boots are bad. Otherwise they seem to do fine. I never do rear bearings.
