[T3] Rear end musings...

There I sat, greasing my... CV's, and a few conclusions came to mind from years of maintaining the
rear axles and bearings.

Original rear IRS bearings are generally good for 180Kmi or so untouched so I think the Muir
recomendation of regreasing them at 60K is a little premature, at least for our T3s which have a
beefier system than the Beetle. I just greased mine at 67K since the last relube and the grease
looked fine! I think 100K is a better interval.. its such a messy job.

For the CV's... 30Kmi seems a good number for regreasing them. I find that if there worn but not
pitted or damaged, they have about 30K left in them before they start to pit and fail, failure seems
a slow process, at least in the beginning when you cannot tell there is anything wrong until you have
them apart. if you grab the shaft and have any up and down play things are totally shot. In and out
play is normal.

and Oh.. WEAR GLOVES!
