I should make it clear that I have never actually seen a Type 3 which 
had been ripped apart by its trailer hitch.  But, once you look at 
what is being asked to take the extra strain of the hitch you see 
that it is only thin sheet metal, and it is also sheet metal that 
tends to die of rust, too.  I just wouldn't trust it.

Extra supports sound good, but there is really nothing close by that 
has any real strength.  The rear subframe IS strong, and on the -68 
cars you might be able to attach to the tranny yoke.  On 69-, you 
would have to go all the way to the front of the tranny.  Even on the 
-68s this would not add vertical strength, only fore/aft.  So I have 
just avoided it on any Type 3 that I liked, which meant ALL of them.
