My experience differs a bit from Keith's...I bought mine used from a guy in southern VA...they must've been sitting in his shed for years with a set of inflated tires on 'em. The spokes were painted red and the outer rim was left untouched (natural metal ones, not the polished wheels). The oxidation after many years was slight at best, and easily rectified with some metal polish. For long-term durability I repainted the spoke area with POR-15's chassis black...not the prettiest finish, but I know it'll resist chipping and stick around for a while. I also painted the backside of the wheel to prevent it from oxidizing. They are now installed on the car with a fresh set of Firestones and look great. They'll be receiving a clear coat before they go into daily service. Maybe they're not the absolute highest quality (can't be for the price), but I think they're handsome wheels...if they're prone to oxidation why can't the guy do a clear coat himself? Just wondering... -Doug 69 auto FI square (sold?) 73 FI fasty (go@@amn it looks good...pictures soon!) 98 NB douglas_brashear@mail.amsinc.com To: type3@vwtype3.org cc: (bcc: Douglas Brashear/AMS/AMSINC) Subject: RE: [T3] Empi 8 spoke Whatever you do DONT use the Empi's!!!! its the single biggest and most expensive mistake I made on my Notch. They are of VERY poor quality... imagine this: Polished aluminum with NO clearcoat! You'll be polishing them for hours every time you so much as wash the car.. even the painted spokes waterspot.
