OK.. EVERYONE... A broken odo with a working speedo is just the fact that the odo shaft has come loose on its drive gear... it needs to be peened back on. The whole odo assy is removable as a unit, the only thing you DONT want to do is remove your speedo needle without some way of recalibrating it. As for insurance, if someone is giving you the run around move on.. quickly.. it is common for the body to be on another pan of another type and year so the companies have easy ways to deal with this and can easily check the VIN # with VW to verify correctness. I have a 65 Notch on a 72 Square pan.. I simply TOLD them this and it was no problem, they do it all the time. And even here in NY antique insurance for it was only $85/yr. Registering it is another thing... you go by what the VIN # is for and tell them none else. This way there is no problem with DMV.
