We also had the smell of gas fumes on our 71 fasty when we bought it - around the filler area. For us it turned out to be the metal filler neck, which had holes rusted in it. I don't know if you can get to that thing without taking off the fenders, but you could probably shine a flashlight down the filler tube to see.
