All this talk about gas fumes around the filler neck reminds me of my 71 fasty. I too noticed gas fumes/smell around the filler neck after filling the car up. I also noticed it when I cornered hard to the left with the tank full. It turns out my steel filler neck tube was also rusted out from getting hit with all of the road debris and salt and stuff. I replaced the filler neck with a good used one from Keith Park (thanks again, Keith). The filler neck can be replaced WITH OUT removing the fender. You need to remove the snap ring from the rubber seal at the filler door and remove the rubber seal. You then disconnect the short (4-6 inch) rubber connector hose to the tank and work the large rubber grommet off of the inner fender with a screw driver. Take it easy with the screwdriver. You will probably want to reuse this piece. Work the grommet off from the inside of the inner fender by pushing the seal lip through the hole in the fender. Then the filler neck should slide up through the filler door opening and out of the inner fender. You will then need to reverse direction and pull the filler neck down inside the fender and out. The large rubber grommett will not fit through the filler door opening. Reinstall is just the opposite of above. That's how I did the job. Remember to replace the fuel fill overflow tube on the filler neck and bring the old filler neck with you to the junk yard because Keith and I noticed a few differences in the filler necks that he had. Good luck. John Jaranson 71 FI Auto Fastback ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much? Digest! mailto:type3-d-request@vwtype3.org Subj=subscribe
