The old adage goes "Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?" It's true. I recommend that you stick with stock while you're on the learning curve. Otherwise you will make things even more expensive than they have to be. Find a good Type 3 core engine to rebuild. You can reuse many of the old parts, some of which are available nowhere else. Many parts can be successfully reused, remanufactured, or rebuilt. Some must be replaced. Check here as your effort continues. Get good manuals and study them; read the mags if you like, but take them with a grain of salt as they carry a very large BS factor and don't have your best interests in mind. It is reasonable to expect to successfully install a "new" engine in a weekend, but only if you are truly prepared. Don't expect to finish a good engine rebuild in less than a couple of months, and if this is your first, it probably won't be right when you get it in. There's a whole lot more to this than the quick and dirty boys would like to think.
