Hello all! I run a stock (engine-wise) 71' squareback. Shorts fixed, new 8 spoke empi's turnin' 195 65 15's ... and I have finally raised my front suspension 1 1/2 inches... you know, turned those splines a notch so I don't rub. The PO had my car slammed! In any case, I think I'm really in trouble.... I've caught the "darkside" bug. I am going to do another repaint (as I rip out the entire interior to be replaced). and I wanted.... (gulp) to build a new larger engine. Nothing too radical, maybe something along the 1776 cc range. I like my fuel injected setup and dispise working on carbs. Because I am fairly new to vw's and am very impressionable by great minds like yourselves, I'd like to hear some opinions and stories (horror included) about what's been done and arguments supporting your decisions. You should know a few things.... My car is my daily driver and it could probbaly only be laid up for 2 weeks at the most. I don't have a ton of money but I usually make ends meat by skipping meals and such to buy parts. I don't really have access to a garage, I'm at school and I work in a parking lot. 3 hrs away I have access to 4 squarebacks for parts... the guy is sooo great, He sold me a whole complete door for 10.00 bucks! He's so happy somebody is rebuilding his favorite car. Cool, huh. I'd like to have a nice daily driver that's reliable and has a bit more umph than the stock 1600 setup. Also, I could probably replace the clutch (just 'cause) and how much can a stock tranny handle??? Just wondering. I really appreciate your imput, you guys have already saved me a ton of money, and have me seriously considering learning to be a real vw mechanic. I wish I could intern (or whatever) under the likes of Jim or Steve. Any particular after market engine brands I should look for/stay away from? Should I find an old 1600 bug engine and just rebuild/machine it? Thanks guys! Charlie PS, I can pull a 1600 bug engine from a not so local junkyard for 45.00 bucks. I have NO idea what kind of condition it could be in.... do you think it is even worth it? Can something like this be resurrected if not too bad? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web! Visit http://www.vwtype3.org/list/
