Okay, I'm fairly certain I did give symptoms, but my Proxy Server sometimes barfs when sending out-of-company e-'s. The car was delivering a steady 21.2 mpg city (after my Vegas debacle, I haven't had a real chance to measure highway driving). She ran along pretty well, except for the persisting rich condition (black smoke), a little oil consumption, and an occasional stumble. The old girl just soldiered along. So, one night at a stoplight (the stumbling had gotten worse, but no more oil consumption, mileage was still fine) it stumbled, and stalled. And thereafter would not idle. I could (eventually) get it to run by feathering the gas pedal, but it was now smoking prodigiously, and really running like meat. There are no knocks (I know well the sound of a T1 with a knock), no more pinging, no real measurable valve tap, no bangs, no excessive oil leakage. I had just changed the oil again, and the dingaling at the VWGuru says there's fuel in my case (I'm on the road for business, hence my giving my baby's care to another), but the next day (before she went to the shop) it was fine. So, while the car was still home, I started diagnosing the problem myself. Started whipping out plugs, and they were *really* badly ganked up. I figured, 'hell, problem solved.' Except that it didn't. I changed out the plugs for some new Bosch's, and no difference. The only really odd thing was, it started right after putting plugs in, right away. Threw off a really, really *huge* cloud of smoke, ran for approximately 20 seconds, and proceeded to run like meat again (no idle). That's where it stands now, I'm going to get my baby back from the butcher shop tomorrow morning (I still have to come back to Texas for three days next week, but I doubt I'll be taking her to this nut-bag again). The part about the scored pistons I think is bullshit. Seized ring, or whatever, sure. She's got two low cylinders, but scored? What say ye? -----Original Message----- From: Jim Adney [SMTP:jadney@vwtype3.org] Sent: Thursday, November 19, 1998 8:46 PM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: RE: [T3] Deathrich On 18 Nov 98, at 18:28, James MacNaughton wrote: > I just talked to a really upright guy here in San Antonio. It MIGHT be bad, but if your problem is that the engine was running too rich, there are a number of other possibilities. BTW, I think you'll find that the MPS will cost well over $100, new. So I would not be tempted to just stick one in as a test. I have good used ones here, and I use them as a last resort in testing. I have only ever needed ONE to replace a bad one--and that was on my own car. [Well, actually there was 1 more: A 914 where the MPS sits under the battery and battery acid ate through the diaphram, but I classify that as abuse, not a product failure.] I don't recall that you've actually given us much in symptoms, however. I think I just read something where you said it just stopped. This doesn't sound like ANY of the problems that have been bandied about so far. Can you give us any more symptoms? Like what the gas mileage was before it quit? How did it quit? How do the spark plugs look now? Will it start at all now? Have you replaced the plugs and did that help?
