It isn't just static weight distribution, it's the 'wheelie' syndrome. There's a rotational torque which helps the grip on the rear on acceleration that doesn't work as much with front wheel drive (unless you are going in reverse, I guess). You surely get the same effect in the rain on the rare occasion it does! Dave.
