Typical thief behaviour - why use a screwdriver or spanner when a big pair of cutters does it all? If it was your parts car, you wouldn't cut battery connectors etc, in case you needed those one day. They're reliable enough, and don't wear out the way mechanical components do. You need at least the ECU and a connecting plug with a few inches of wire, but it makes sense to collect a wiring harness as well, rather than just join the wires again (you will have to work out what connects where to join them).
