Don't worry about the needles not sticking out. The best way to check them is to test spray them. There should be a ground wire for the fuel pump on your wire harness in the engine compartment, which when grounded, will pressure the fuel system. With the key turned on, the ignition system disarmed and the injectors out (connected to the fuel lines still), you can turn the engine with a wrench until each injector "fires". Look for a cone-shaped spray from each injector which is good.
