Re: type 4 engine into '73 squareback

Thomas,

I am in the process of installing a 2.0 litre Type 4 engine from a Vanagon
into my 72 Fastback. So far I have had to buy a pair of Weber 40 DCNF carbs,
small manifolds for same and linkage. The stock carbs are too tall to fit
under the decklid of my Type 3. I also had to buy a 210/215mm clutch +
flywheel, plus a small bush for the centre of the flywheel to support the
Type 3 input shaft as it's shorter than the late bus one, part no
111105313A - Needle Bearing. You also have to rig up some sort of engine
mounting to support the engine. My cars previous owner had a Porsche 914
motor in the fastback and had fabricated the mounting already so I am just
buying a 914 engine mounting bar. I'm also fitting a Bosch 009 and blue
coil. You need an air intake bellows from a type 4 and the plastic part that
mounts it onto the end on the fan. This can then be modified to connect with
the Type 3 bellows. In my case I also need to shorten my dipstick, rig up
the oil filler tube and and oil breather as well.
The carburetors I am using cost me £40 for the pair at a British junkyard
from an Austin MG Maestro. I don't know how common they are in the US or
what cars you may be able to get them from. The manifolds are also quite
difficult to get hold of, I had to settle for a set of second hand ones from
Gene Berg for $50.

Anything else you need to know, get back to me
