I don't have answers for Greg, so I'll change the title of the subject line so someone answers the question. Anyway, I have a question...how can I install a filter pump on my engine where I can use the HP-1 filters but not have problems with the filter hitting my exhaust. I have your typical header w/ single quiet pack...the car is a 69 squareback with a stock FI engine. I'm basically looking for a bolt on solution...hopefully no engine modifications required. Thanks, -Doug 74 super 69 auto FI square douglas_brashear@mail.amsinc.com To: type3@vwtype3.org cc: mjanello@umich.edu, wpc@po.cwru.edu (bcc: Douglas Brashear/AMS/AMSINC) Subject: oil filter failure, chapter 2 Hey all, Some of you may recall that about a month ago the oil light came on on my '69 (basically stock except for a full-flow filter). Unfortunately I cannot mount a Fram HP1 filter due to the location of the mounting bracket. (Don't ask... yes, I will rearrange things eventually!) I've been using other filters which are a bit smaller than the HP1 and do not have the internal high pressure bypass. Anyway, when the light came on a month ago, the "problem" was solved by installing a new oil filter. Fast forward to this weekend. I changed the oil on Friday night. Valvoline Durablend (semi-synthetic) 10w30, and installed a small standard Fram filter--PH2870A, or something like that. Drove over 300 miles the next day. The car sat idle all day yesterday. Got in the morning, started it up & headed out of the parking lot. Pulled onto the road, and HELLO! The oil light comes on nice & bright; precisely the same location, time of day, etc. etc. as a month ago. Shut the engine off, coasted onto a side street. My daughter & I ran home and got some oil & a filter & some tools. (...and the latex gloves; can't get greasy when you're wearing a tie!) Installed a new filter & everyting was hunky-dory again. I do have the Berg relief cover, but now I'm wondering if morning oil pressures are damaging these filters. (The first one that failed was a Bosch, this one a Fram.) I had previously presumed that the first failure was due to a dirty filter--a filter which was on the car from about mile 500 to mile 1,500 after a rebuild. Now I don't believe it's due to a clogged filter. Neither one appeared bulged out. Can they become internally damaged? Help! -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
