On my '71, the throttle position sensor tells the injectors to shut off completely when the throttle closes (and engine speed is over 1,200 or 1,800rpm, or something like that). My '71 has leaky seals up the wazoo--and doesn't have that smell when engine braking. Never has. Unless I'm terribly mistaken, the TPS on the '69 also has the injectors shut down. It's a siimpler TPS, and I *believe* that's its only duty. At least one of the pop-outs on my '69 doesn't close completely. The back hatch seal is probably the worst seal on the car, though they're pretty good overall for original seals. Also, the rear hatch closes a tad funny--there is some damage where it looks like someone tried to close it with a golf club or broom stick poking out of the trunk opening near the left hinge. Hmmm... I think I'll check the adjustment of the TPS on my '69--if that makes the smell go away, then it means that the source of the smell is gas dumping through the system while engaged in engine braking. (See, there is zero smell at cruise or under acceleration.) Hmm... -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
